Best Heatsink/Fan for...

This thing (AMD Phenom 9850 for those not clickhappy)

It idles around 45c with my current heatsink and fan, hits mid 60s playing GW, and hit 77-78c when I tried a match on DoW II. Preferably I would like to find something under $40, but if it isn't possible, I'll just have to bite it and not get a new case and powersupply. (I've got a max of $90 coming in the next 4-5 weeks)
 
What hsf are you using now? Which mobo do you have? on your case and psu what are the fan setup? I am using the stock hsf that came with my cpu. I am using the power savings software that came with the mobo which throttles the voltage and clock speed down and up dynamically along with what the cpu does automatically in it's internals. I average 15 W or less at idle and under 100F at idle. I don't go above 150 F at any time so far..:)

And the side of the case is currently (and rather permanently) off the case.

The cpu didn't come with a stock hsf so I had to make do. I'm pretty sure the problem is that the cooler is compatible with 65W quads instead of the 125W mine is. Someone had recommended this for it.
 
the one your friend suggested is about right. you always want full copper for heat dispersion. some of the zalman and thermaltake models for $70 are nice but i figure if you pay that much, just go the extra mile for water.
 
yiour hsf is entirely undercapacity. I ahve not found anything at the $40 pricepoint that is either compatible or beefy enough to reliably handle the job.

make sure to pony up for some arctic silver grease(only a little bit.. just enough to barely cover up the heatsink base metal) and install it.

for your mobo see if there is a driver cd. put that into your optical drive and let it come up. See if there is a motherboard utilities section or something like that. My asrock(which is made by asus) has that and that piece of software is what is responsible for the large gains in power and heat reduction i am seeing(also having a decent hsf works wonders..<G>)

one caveat..coolers this size(and that goes for any modern cpu) can have clearance problems so make sure you have short ram and plenty of clearance around the cpu socket. My stock hsf almost blocked my first ram slot.

ya mine i had to clip a metal piece sticking out because it wouldt fit with my PSU close by. i concur on the artic silver, best stuff around.
 
Water cool the beast, that way you can always have the cooling you need just perhaps have to change cooling blocks. I bought Koolance a few years back and she's still running strong. 80F degree room and my PC will never get over 40C, idles at 30C
 
That's what I was afraid of. I won't have to worry about the width of the case because as I said my case doesn't have a side. :P

However since I won't be getting the money to pay for the hsf for a good four/five weeks, I'll just have to be careful in the meantime...

My mobo came with the Cool & Quiet software and PC Probe II. Cool & Quiet works fine, but I can't seem to get PC Probe to come up. It starts the process, but nothing else.
 
Before you buy anything, put the case door back on and see if the temperature decreases. Having the door open kills any air flow you get.

I also have a Phenom 9850 and I use the stock heatsink and fan and I have no issues.

My opinion is close the door and put the stock heatsink back on.

Edit: since you linked an OEM (I guess) 9850, I am assuming you did not get a stock HSF with it.

When/If you close the door and then the temp does not go down, look at Thermaltake. Thermaltake makes excellent HSF's, they are pricey but good.

normally that would work odale but his hsf is only rated for 65 not the 125 w his cpu is rated for so putting the door on will only exacerbate the issue,,also if he does not have dedicated case fans then leaving the side off is better, i run mine with the side off and it lowers my temps. if i had case fans then i would try case on.
 
That's the problem. I can't close it (it was, like most of my stuff, given to me) because the door is busted. Best I can do is lean it back against it or stick it next to a wall. Which I'll try to do and see if anything good happens.

i'm sure he would and i would to but not for the amount of $$$..especially when i am nearly matching your temps with air cooling..:)
 
Hey, if someone's willing to fork out the cash I'm all for water cooling. ;)

Putting the case against a wall brought the idle temp up to 52c, so it is going back into its normal spot.
 
like i said with your cooler at half capacity putting a cover on the side of any kind is going to increase not decrease your temps.. get one of the coolers i suggested.

I guess that all depends on what you consider nearly to be defined as. me idling at 30C and full load (prime95) never over 40C and your idle 37C and full load not going over 65C. A 25C swing doesn't seem that close to me, plus I achieved these temps on every cpu I've ran on the rig (3 so far AMD and Intel) with out having to change anything but pin placement for the bracket.

Like right now a 79F cpu temp in a room at 75F it don't get much better with out actually using a refrigerant (which I might just do for fun)
 
I am idling at 35 C on the stock HSF and the mobo power saving software. I could spend 40-60 bucks and change out the hsf and get to within a degree of your temp at idle. Under load is where you would take me for sure but you are also talking about more than double the cost(unless they have dropped their prices dramatically recently..so i could be wrong here). It's not worth the $$$ premium when i'm not at 60% of the processor's TDP under max loads. Care to let me enlighten me on the costs of the koolance system?

My Koolance system was a package they don't offer any more, it cost me just shy of $300 a couple years ago. But there are a lot smaller systems that you can put together for just over $200. Mine is as follows and today would cost me around $350

Radiator
Fan
Cooling Block
Reservoir/Pump
Coolant
Nozzle Pairs x2
Tubing 4-5 ft.

The nice thing I love about it is I can overclock and have no worries on cooling issues. I'm currently running a Intel Duo 7300 stock 2.67 at 3.66 and the cooling still won't let it go over 40C on full loads. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but for me I like knowing that finding better HS for my cpu isn't needed anymore.
 
I've gotta keep it well under $90. Cause that $90 is going to have to last me most if not all summer. Until the money arrives however, I'm just going to have to avoid any heavy usage.
