A friend of mine is looking into starting his own blog, but isn't familiar with services like Blogger, LiveJournal, Xanga, WordPress and so on. Since I use Joomla for my personal web site and WordPress for my family site, I'm not familiar with the free blog hosting services any more. It's been ages since I kept a LiveJournal or Blogger sites, so I'm no longer in the loop.

If anyone can provide insight on such services, it would be greatly appreciated.

I used Blogger for awhile in a horrible attempt at a blog that crashed and burned, and then got back up and mutulated itself and then died again -- and then blew up. While I never sampled anything else, it was really easy for me to set up. I had no problems.

livejournal, blogger work great..however you can't beat wordpress.com's free service as that is an actual blog software maker giving away a fully functioning wordpress isntallation. I would rec wordpress.

Wordpress is nice, I speak from experience. Blogger is nice too and has improved a lot since Google got its claws into it, again I speak from experience. Blogger has more access to the code so you can add things like Google's AdSense, where as Wordpress does not.

uhh..wrong. Wordpress is 100% open source. You ahve access down to the actual source code of the whole software package if you want it. Follow my advice above..take some time to truly learn wordpress..it's many times more flexible than blogger can ever hope to be.

Ok..Wow..Somebody woke on the wrong side of the bed....Sorry for interfering..Ill just slink away back to my un-informed hole.

And now, my two cents!

For free blog services, here are my recommendations:

~ Wordpress.com - It's essentially WordPress we've come to know and love without dealing with web hosting.
~ Blogger - I did use this for a while before I switched to my own, hosted blog situation. The Blogger app isn't bad... it gets you going in the right direction, and you can set it up easily.

Blogger, IMO, is easier and more average-user-friendly than WordPress, but WordPress has some pretty nifty features (which I'm sure you know about since you ran a WP blog, Tek). So if the guy has the experience, go with WordPress.com, otherwise I would recommend Blogger.

can't figure out the multi-quote feature yet rofl...:) I'm not trying to blugdeon anyone. For anyone who feels that way i apologize for my lack of tact.

(Hehe, I should write up a tutorial on the multi-quote thing...)

Apology accepted. We're cool -- just be careful. =)

Thank you to all who posted their recommendations.

So it looks like it's down to Blogger or WordPress. I'll suggest that he try them both (since they're free accounts, after all) and close out the account with the hosting service he likes less.
