Age of Mythology

Just wondering what you guys thought, Christians and non-Christians alike.

Also, Eon, just wondering if you are offended by the game at all, as an Asatruaar. (Dunno if you know the game, you can play as the Norse gods...)

You don't play as Norse gods; you can play as Norse and have the ability to call on the gods to aid your civilization from time to time.

1 Corinthians 8:

[b said:
Quote[/b] ]4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

I don't see why there'd be a problem with AoM. If you have a problem with mythology in general or playing a game where you control a civilization that holds alternate religions then don't play it. Just because I play a game where the civilization under my control is granted a lightning bold by Zeus, doesn't mean that I'm asking for lightning or actually belief in the existance of / worship Zeus.

The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to have "favor" to build certain things. You gain favor by worshipping at a temple.

To be honest I'm just glad that people still remember the old ways enough to put them in a game - because that's how Asatruism survived the purges and the Burning Times - through carefully masked storys.

If you read any of the Northern Christian stuff you should be able to break the code, where they took the old stories and slapped some saints name to them - like Saint George and the Dragon, is actually an attempt to preserve Beowulf in a Christian community.

That's what this is - it might not be, in and of itself, something that will make a lukewarm Christian consider the Old ways, but it will keep them in the mind and the heart. I consider it a good thing - provided that nobody pretends it's an accurate representation! ;)

after playing AoM for a couple of years, I did some reading up on actual Egyptian and Norse mythology...Norse stuff reminds me of the Klingons from Star Trek...no offence

As a Christian I've personally never had a problem playing games like this since I know they're just video games. But I remember that I was kinda offended when Black and White came out, given this a bit different.

So Eon, you wouldn't consider a game like that to be disgraceful to your gods? I guess part of my question stems out of the fact that I'm not sure about how you handle reverence and tribute and stuff like that in your religion.

I don't see any problem with it - I'd far rather that the Norse be remembered as the rough and tumble but basically honest folk that they were, rather than having them remembered solely for a pushy and prickly political action group that sues game developers! ;)

What's the point in expecting reverence from people who don't share your beliefs? That's the quickest way I know of getting offended! ;)

And yes, the Vikings were a bit like the Klingons - when things went right, anyway.

I play it, and am fine with it. I've read up on my history, I know about those dead religions. It doesn't bother me. Nothing really takes me for a turn when I play it.
As long as you don't suddenly convert to ancient Greek gods, I think you're fine.
