accidentally buying pirated material?

Question:

What is the general stance of individuals on here about pirated material?

A friend a while back purchased a full adobe master collection on ebay, a few hundred dollars, not abnormal price, and it came without the box and was a burned dvd with a code.....

my wife recently bought an anime collection on the internet, I checked it first to make sure it looked legit. It had the dvd collector box, all the appropriate stuff as retail, dvds came and looked good, no signs of pirated material, until like episode 9 when a tv channel announcement came up on the screen.....

soooo????

policies? thoughts? never had to deal with this much.

Accidentally running over a politician doesn't make you a murderer.
And there's the forums quote of the day.

I'd say your friend should contact eBay about the Adobe collection because I'm pretty sure that's a violation of the eBay ToS.

Then again, the physical DVD isn't the issue; the legitimacy of the code is. It's standard procedure in IT to install Windows from a burned CD or DVD and it's perfectly legal so long as your key is legitimate.

As for the anime collection, I'd recommend the same: Contact the site where the anime was sold and report the seller.

Man, that story evokes nostalgia and memories of cheap VCDs on eBay circa 1999.

Counterfeit money

If someone gives it to you, you should report them to the FBI but they will confiscate the money and you will be out that money.

If you try to use it yourself, it's dishonest and thievery.

Report the people who sold it and throw away what you've got. Count the loss as a life lesson.

Where is that in the Bible?

I believe that would fall under the follow man's law concept. :)

Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by... 1 Peter 2:13+

As for the OP, I do not believe you are in the wrong. If anything, you are part of the victim in paying good money on a less-than promised product. As for the social protocol for when that happens, I don't know. I would contact Ebay and flag that seller.

You should only buy anime collections from their official sites, if it's not available in america then you shouldn't buy it..

Totally agree with El Presidente here. Plus the thing about the CD key is totaly spot on!

I don't think they're stupid enough to make free trials work that way...

...are they?

If they aren't, would it be wrong to edit your registry (not a crack, or anything, your OWN registry) to make the free trial, erm, perpetual?

Actually, it doesn't say anything about accidentally (the operative word is accidentally) killing anyone.

You could just download the 30-day trial from Adobe's website and reinstall every thirty days.

You might as well go on and pirate it, then.

Because it's unintentional, I'd report the seller to Ebay and demand the money back or demand they replace what was received with a legitimate copy of what supposed to be delivered (especially the Adobe purchase).

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that receiving stolen goods (with knowledge that they are stolen) is considered illegal in the US.

You* can complain about overpriced items all you want. The producer of that item has a right to price it how he/she/they see fit. If you* don't want to pay for and receive the item that is up to you*. But you* DO NOT have the right to go obtain** a copy for free or a reduced price because they have priced it beyond you*. Just like you* don't have a right to go take a luxury automobile you* cannot afford. The worker is worth his wages, do not cheat him out of them.

Atown alluded to the fact that the buyers in both cases were deceived and were made unaware of the legitimacy of the products. I don't think they bought them on purpose. Also, I don't think they complained about the prices, either.

Anyway, your piracy rant makes me wonder why I am not being paid $10,000 an hour at work... hmm.

Right, but once they became aware that these were not legitimate products it falls on them to report the issue.

You can certainly charge that, but I don't think anyone will (or can) pay. Supply and demand.

Patriot, i agree with you on this kind of stuff and thats why i double checked the ebay seller before letting my wife make the purchase. Even though it cripples me not being able to use the latest adobe for example, and i'm tired of CS3, if i cant buy it, i cant buy it.
