If you look at your character as an extension of yourself, then maybe the answer is yes. But if you view it as just character, like one from a novel, and you get to choose the outcome of that character, then you are just bettering the story for yourself, correct? Not to get off topic here...

also, if you have a friend press f4, go to the friends drop down, and right click that friends name to phase to their instance of the server.
