I do the same thing as vibro. Movement and skills 1-4 on the keyboard, I also used it for the hot keyed targeting, like T for called targets, C for the closest. And of course the almighty space bar! I use the mouse for manual targeting and skills 5-8, as well as changing the camera angle...

Are you starting in Factions or Prophecies? If you are in factions leveling is much easier. Also, you can get scrolls from the quartermasters with Imperial Commodations and Monastery Credits.
