Haggai 1:5-6, NIV:

Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

When I first read this, it was hard to fathom that God said this to Israel more than 400 years before Christ came. Other than a few dated phrases and expressions, it really looks like God could be talking right to modern America.

We want a good paying job, financial stability, a retirement account, a big house, new cars, expensive clothes, the best computers (for playing the latest games, of course). We try to earn and buy our way to happiness, yet it all seems to go into a purse with holes in it - happiness keeps slipping through our grasp.

Instead, we should put our efforts, energies, and resources into serving God:

Haggai 1:7-8, NIV:

This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD.

God goes on to say that the people have not found satisfaction in life because they are pursuing the wrong things. But when they serve the Lord, they are blessed.

I love Haggai - it is a good New Year series. Thanks for this reminder.
