1 Chronicles 15:11-13
"And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, and said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
For because ye did it not at the first, the Lord our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order."
David and his men were men of action -- heroes of their time who were overjoyed and anxious to return the Ark of the Covenant back to its place. But they had learned the hard way that even with the best intentions, simply getting things done without taking the time to do it God's way is not acceptable. Sanctifying our hearts and paying attention to all the Lord teaches and asks of us is a necessary first step before attempting any work on His behalf, no matter how urgent or important it may seem, or else our work may end up pushing us further from Him instead of bringing us closer like we desire.
