hey guys,
well im moving to a very big hosue here soon and i need you guys help on seting up a netowrk.

im looking for wifi over the whloe house and some outside.
a firewall (ipcop or smoothwall)
10/100/1000 lan
a hp netowrk printer.
on the netowrk i would have 10-15 pc's with cat6 cables and 6 laptops running wifi (all have 802.11g)
with the house being so big i would need more than one wifi ap
i have about $500-$600 to spend

wifi isn't going to support that many pc's and have any kind of speed. Unless you are going to be moving multi-gig files around then 100 megabits will be fine. use cat5e as it can handle gigabit and save the expense of cat 6. most of your budget is going to be the cables. For the nics do all of the pc's have them built in or do you need to buy some?

before we can give any firm recommendations we need the full details on the lan(how many of the machines have nics and which ones don't, operating systems...etc etc etc). Wired however is the way to go as wireless is only going to give you 10 megabits at the most and that's shared between all 15 machines..not good.

ok i have (desktops)
windows xp pro 2 gig ports on mobo
windows xp home 10/100 nic
cent os 10/100

laptops (wifi)
hp dv2000 802.11a/b/g
dellxps 802.11 g
dell??? 802.11g
compaqt 802.11b/g (runs hp's vpn)

stick with cat5e. any desktops get them off wifi and onto cat5E Notebooks can stay on wifi..make sure it's WPA protected "g" though.
