Dilemma

We might as well get some use out of this forum, no?

Here's my dilemma.

My daughter and her friend (who lives next door) have befriended a neighborhood dog.

This is a full grown adult dog, I'm not sure of its breed, but it's a good sized dog.

The dog used to have a collar with a dog tag.

According to the girls, the owner doesn't want to have anything to do with the dog, going so far as offering it to the girls. They tried taking it back to the owners several times, but the dog keeps getting away.

The dog showed up again this weekend, sans dog tag. My theory is the owners removed it so it can't be traced back to them.

It's sad looking at this dog, he just LOOKS unhappy. I open my front door and he's RIGHT there. He lounges in our yard and has basically taken up residence here.

Now don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but I don't know anything about this dog. Nor are we in a situation to adopt the dog. We rent a house and have other pets including a cat (which does NOT like the dog hanging around outside).

The LAST thing I want to do is call the SPCA or animal control, since I know what will most likely happen to the dog. I can't contact the owner with no tag and they're unlikely to take the dog back since they keep letting it go.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Send it to an animal shelter, a real one run by pet lovers. They can find an appropiate place to adopt it.

Have you contacted the dog owner personally to find out what he wants to do with the dog. EVen if you are unable to take it, you should discuss the future for the animal.

No I haven't, they are incredibly difficult to get a hold of.

I'm pretty sure that they don't give a flip about the dog. They don't secure it and have removed it's tags.

Keeping the dog or giving it up for adoption yourself can and will put you into a legal bind. You don't know the dogs past and if the dog does something extremely stupid with new owners who think you are the previous pet owner, you could be up the creek.

Contact your local SPCA and find out if your state has any laws against this type of abandonment of animals. Maybe you can have this guy nipped in the butt.

You have a few options as to what to do with the dog:

1. Adopt him\her yourself. Cats and Dogs are not necessarily enemies. Your cat is probably being territorial with a strange dog in the yard. I have a dog, two cats, a bird, some gerbals and a bunch of fish in aquariums and in a yard pond. You'd think they'd all be natural enemies. They aren't, they have all gotten used to each other. So it is possible

2. Let the dog roam free. Survival of the fittest and all :P

3. Take the dog to the SPCA. Maybe it will be adopted, maybe not.

4. Take the dog to a shelter that has its animals invloved in other aspects of the community. There are shelters that have arrangements with old folks homes and hospitals where they take pets to people as a form of therapy.

I agree because i have a dog and two cats but they grew up together and there cool keep dogs outside cats inside

Sounds like the Christian Gamers Alliance may have a mascot. *g*

Honestly, I'd advise keeping him around but not bringing him indoors. In the meantime, take a picture of the dog, upload it to a web page and post the link here, and put the picture on a few "Dog free to good home" flyers around local neighborhoods (taking out an ad in the local newspaper may be too expensive for your taste).

First, though, speak with the original owner to guarantee that he/she does not want the dog.

P.S. Bowser sounds like a good name.

Has Bowser our guard/porch dog returned?  I do so hope he isn't tumbling the neighbors garbage.  Do we need to take up a dog chow collection?

owners may have him or the pound, either way he may not be returning (i love dogs Dogs>cats anyday of the week cats make for greak soccer balls ;) )

You have a sentimentalist within you?  That should prove there is a God

lol  I was hoping that Bowser might be living proof for you...that God might just tug that good ole' sentimental heart, to remind you for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Well, nevemind, we need logical!  Hopefully, Bowser if off learning to knock on a door and give the plan of salvation
