I've got a spare computer. Here are the specs:
  • 667MHz CPU (Intel)
  • 64MB RAM
  • 2GB HDD
  • 10/100Mbps NIC
  • 56K modem
  • CD-R/W drive
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • USB ports (2)
  • FDD (floppy disk drive)
What cool things can I do with it?

DXBall and music.

That's how I spend my zombie time at 4 am while the coffee is brewing :D

OR I would probably use it for storage of random shenanigans like game configs

OR just use it as a CD/DVD player when American Idol is on :D

Throw everything out of it and use the case to build a better computer...

That era of Presario's were built using entirely custom components - so basically only a motherboard from Compaq would actually fit into it.

Onto the actual subject...

drop in linux, daisy chain some more harddrive space and get a tv tuner in/out card and use it as a DVR...

drop in linux, stick it onto your router as a server for authentication so that you can have roaming profiles between your other pcs.

remove and toss the side.. take out all the parts, , and line the inside with plexiglass and turn it into an aquarium.

set it beside the bed to hold your drink as you read (this only works if it's anything but a micro-tower and you don't have a really high bed)

put it near a window for a perch for your cat...

okay, i've gotta get back to work now..

Does anyone have more specific advice on turning it into a file server?

I liked the router suggestion, but I already have a WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware installed. That covers the essentials.

ever watch office space... all I have to say it PC Load Letter... what does that mean... take it out and enjoy beating it up :)
