Starting with just two new items for the Medic, Valve are going to be gradually rolling out new, unlockable weapons for every class. These will be alternative versions of their current loadouts that, once unlocked by earning a certain number of achievements, you can pick and choose from on a new 'Loadout' menu.

Does anyone else think this is a bad idea?

At the least, this could spell doom for the fledgling TF2 competition community.

The strong get stronger, always the case.

At least it might help a weaker team who might have a strong player even the field? ya right...

I hate to pass judgement on changes made to a game before I get to try them out, so I will hold my tongue on this one until we see a finished product.

I suppose Valve earned a bit of faith by releasing the awesomeness that is TF2, so I'll wait until I see this in action (along with whether or not Valve allows us to disable the new features with a cvar instead of having to develop a plugin to override a bad game design decision) before posting any sort of rant.

Still, I'm not optimistic.

My thought is that sure you made the weapon stronger in one sense, but you also weakened it dramatically in another. So it may end up that a well set up team uses both of a class to achieve it's purpose .

The new game mode is showcased in Goldrush - the map that will ship alongside cp_badlands in a little over a month from now. One team must escort a small mining cart through a series of Dustbowl-like map segments. The cart moves faster the more Blue players are near it, but stops entirely if even one Red player is in range. Blue have to escort the cart all the way to Red's headquarters within a certain timelimit.

that idea sounds interesting...

I think that this situation is wholly dependent upon how long it takes a person to complete the achievements. Of course, if your opponents already have the upgrades it will make it that much harder.

I am undecided, but I am not hopeful.

WoW-style "You don't play the game 80 hours a week so you get mowed down by a 13-year old 5kr1p7 k1dd13's ZOMGWITWBBQAVRIL 8000 while reloading a Hello Kitty(TM) Peashooter" punishment FTL.

I think Valve is like the idiot savant of developers. The TF2 team understands how to make a team-based FPS that moves the genre forward, but doesn't understand that MMO game elements like random events (i.e. crits) and "grinding" to unlock weapons have no place in a FPS.

Valve is like that guy who can play a Rachmaninoff piece after hearing it only once but can't tie his own shoelaces without help.

EDIT: I really wanted to wait until the patch release before making snarky comments, but I'm just too nervous that Valve is going to ruin the awesome game that I've been waiting for for the last 8 years with gimmicky features. Crits work for WoW. Unlockable weapons work for CoD4. That doesn't mean that either feature will work in TF2.

I hate crits. The term "unlockable" means you have to spend time to get the "unlocked" weapons. So, yes it would be very MMO-ish.

Yea but really, what do you have to do to unlock the items? It's not "grind" based like in an MMO. It's achievement based. 8 of the new achievements for the Medic are "Heal a class" and others are just as easy I'm sure. Others, maybe more difficult, but join a server with a few friends and spend a few minutes setting up the conditions for the achievements and you'll get them unlocked.

I dunno...like, if the weapons are balanced, how is choosing a loadout any different than doing the same thing in Counter Strike, Tribes, Enemy Territory? Also, with different weapons, you'll increase the tactical options available to you, adding a little spice. The new weapons don't make the old ones obsolete, or at least I hope they won't.

Personally I'd like to see more Valve-created maps before I see new weapons.

From what I've seen on the new weapons I think they will be ok. The new medic Overhealer is kinda cool in that you can boost peoples health, but I think it will stay balanced because you remove uber. I see that gone giving players advantages over other players, but being useless against trying to kill a well placed Sentry.
