30 days in Azeroth

A friend recently bought me and my wife each a copy of World of WarCraft, so I'm visiting Azeroth while my free 30 days last.

I've only logged in a few times since starting the clock last Thursday (Dec. 3). According to Battle.net, my time in Azeroth ends Jan. 3, 2010.

I've received several "You're playing WoW?!" messages on Xfire and Steam and explained myself on each occasion, but wanted to post a forums thread to chronicle my brief visit as well.

I'm also posting this thread to thank everyone who has greeted me warmly. Despite all of my nitpicks with the MMO genre and my talk about lack of innovation in the genre, being able to pop in and chat with people at leisure is still a welcome respite.

But unless Blizzard decides to give free subscriptions to leaders of 10-year old Christian gaming groups with over 1,500 members, I'll be letting my time expire on Jan. 3. As fun as it is to visit, I'm not willing at this time to pay $30 a month ($15 a month for an account for me, $15 for an account for my wife) to play WoW. I may drop $15 for 30 days after Cataclysm comes out next year to check out the changes to Azeroth, but that's a ways off yet.

The $15 gets easier every month!

I think it was especially easy since I was already paying that when I got married, so it wasn't considered a "new expense". Plus, autobilling makes it so I usually don't even notice it's gone.

Anyway, we're glad to have you while we can - and remember, I'm there for any questions you may have!

This is my main's name, and my various alts are:

Redletters 80 Paladin
Marinus 80 Death Knight
Likeminded 70 Priest
Choppermad 70 Druid

...and of course my guild banker character Redmats!

When you have a vast disposable income it sure does.

Says the guy who buys toilet paper. Now that's flushing money down the toilet! *groans from the audience*

:*(

You did roll Horde, right?

Right?

Tek, you better be a burly moo moo creature guy or a ugly swamp creature or else things get nasty [like Left 4 Dead 2(tm)'s gore animation system, brought to you by Valve! ;D]

fwiw...there are other subscription options. if it strikes your fancy, you can get it to 12 / mo if you go w/ an extended subscription. for the amount of time i blow on it, it's worth the $ :)

If you buy time cards on ebay, you can get even lower per month than the 6 month package. Thats what I did. I got a 60 day time card for like 24 $$ (you can get it lower) and no shipping because the code was emailed to me.

If I was going to stick around, I'd look into that; however, I have reasons other than the financial to quit after my 30 days are up. It's clear that Blizzard have improved the game in the last 2 years, but early levels still feel like work rather than fun.

My main beef with MMOs, aside from the monthly fee, is that the fun to time ratio is not as favorable as other games. The delay between the start of the game and having fun is also significantly longer than other games. I can fire up Quake Live and join a game within 60 seconds. Within a few seconds after joining the game, I'm having fun. I can drop after a few rounds (15-30 minutes) and be finished.

While I miss the depth of the social experience available in MMOs, it's still not worth spending my gaming time, which is supposed to be fun, with tasks that feel more like work. I idle and chat in a few different IRC channels, but I don't pay $15 a month for the software or access to IRC channels.

I won't rehash my entire "This is why I don't play MMOs any more," because most of our forum regulars have already read my explanation at some point during the last 2 years. I just wanted to explain that my decision to quit WoW after my 30 days expire is not a snap decision. I had made up my mind before I ever installed the WoW client last week.

I don't think the point of this thread should be to convince Tek + Ember that they should play WoW more. I'm pretty sure that if Tek had oodles of money lying around they'd play, if only because there is a lot of people they know in the game.

Two thoughts: Thanks for visiting us, Tek! Hopefully we'll see you again before the 3rd.

Blizzard is hiring, Tek. Their website is excellent in terms of presentation and requirements. Maybe you should give them a look.

UPDATE: My wife and I both hit level 16 with our main characters on (I think) Tuesday night.

Here's a list of my other characters:
  • Hevel (Hebrew for "breath"), level 10 Dwarf Rogue on Stonenmaul
  • Atless (a play on the name Atlus), level 1 Gnome Mage and bank character on Stonemaul
  • Sulevar, level 7 Night Elf Druid on Terenas
  • Yiskah (Hebrew for "one who looks out" a reference to my old Tauren Shama, Yiska, whose name meant "the night has passed" in the Navajo language), level 1 Tauren Shaman on Blade's Edge
Just 17 days left.

Tek would have to work 24/7, overdose on caffeine and totally alienate himself from the world at large.
Alienating myself from the world isn't that far off, what with being unemployed and all, but the caffeine would be very, very bad for a hypoglycemic.

And yes, to level from 17 (hit 17 last night) to 60 in 16 days would be rough, especially considering I never leveled past 48 the first time around.

EDIT: Also, I only play my Night Elf Hunter (currently my highest level character by 7 levels) when my wife and I play together.

So even if my wife and I were inclined to drop $30 a month for 2 WoW accounts (since the game has never been as much fun as it is when I play with my wife), I still can't get over the cost of expansions: $140 plus tax (if purchased in a brick and mortar store) for 2 copies each of Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

Ember said she wouldn't mind playing with just the base game for a while, but I played in the Burning Crusade beta and exploring is, for me, one of the most interesting aspects of any MMO. I'd also like to play as a Draenei again.

And Wotlk has by far the most enjoyable exploration experience in the game imo. And I should know, I got my exploration achievement and tabard. ;)
