Freeware alternatives to commercial software

Please use this thread to post freeware alternatives and to request such alternatives for commercial programs.
I'm posting a few requests myself. :)

  • Microsoft Word 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Excel 2003
  • Microsoft Frontpage 2003
  • Adobe Photoshop CS2
  • Alcohol 120%
  • Jasc Animation Shop 3
  • Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 [particularly PSP's "Browse" feature]
  • Microsoft Money 2004
  • mIRC
  • WinRAR
  • WinZip 9.0 SR-1

I use TheGimp for photo editing. It lacks some of Photoshop's more advanced areas of printing and colors, but it is an extremely advanced freeware product. I use the Windows version. The Linux version currently allows you to attach a printer profile which starts moving it into more advanced printing options, so I really hope they add it to the Windows version. The UI is not as clear and easy to use as Photoshop, but the more you use it, the more familiar you get with the layout.

I'll need to re-read those earlier threads which started all this. I skimmed them while I was on my business trip and wanted to reply.

openoffice.org for ur word processing stuff, alchohol 120%? isnt that a burn program? just use, windows built-in burn software :P and for jasc, i find that picasa is much simpler and organizeable than jasc

* Microsoft Word 2003 -OpenOffice.org
* Microsoft Outlook 2003 - Mozilla/Thunderbird
* Microsoft Excel 2003 -OpenOffice.org
* Microsoft Frontpage 2003 -
* Adobe Photoshop CS2 - The Gimp
* Alcohol 120% - Mounting ISOs, etc.? Daemon Tools. Burning CDs? CDBurnerXP
* Jasc Animation Shop 3 - Not sure!
* Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 [particularly PSP's "Browse" feature] - Not sure!
* Microsoft Money 2004 - Money Manager or AceMoney
* mIRC - Trillian
* WinRAR - QuickZip
* WinZip 9.0 SR-1 - QuickZip

Good enough?? Thought so! =D

You could use deep burner for an alternative to Alcohol or Nero's CD burning, they have a free version, and it's an ok program. Also if you want an alternative to Alcohol's virtual drive capabilites, just get daemon tools.

Awesome thread! And im gonna d/l the Gimp ASAP!

Here is my 2 cents worth.

IrFanView

Im sure everyone has it, but some may not. Its good for opening any image filetype. And I do mean any.

Today only Until 12am Pacific time. 8-30-05 to 8-31-05 get the browser Opera (ad free version). It ends tonight. Go to http://www.download.com and then choose the Opera download. On the download page in the text is the email address to send an email to. I just put registerme in the subject line and typed a short message to send me a registry number.
email address is registerme at opera dot com.

Also Avast antivirus is free to use. http://www.avast.com

I use Alcohol 120% to make backups of the game I purchase. A120% is the best at circumventing copy protection on newer games like UT2004 and Half-Life 2. While I don't condone piracy, I take advantage of my right to make backups of games I purchase.

Other programs burn images and such, but they usually don't bypass copy protection schemes. If there's a freeware tool that does the same (i.e. allows me to backup Half-Life 2, which is protected by SecuROM), I'd prefer using it.

Ah, okay, gotcha. I wasn't sure how you meant it to be used. When you say "Alcohol 120%", that could mean many things. =D

How do you use frontpage? Do you use it like word and need the buttons and menus to create HTML or do you use it to color code the HTML?

^^ I second that. I used to use a program called Namo WebEditor for coding, and a "trial" version of Dreamweaver at one point as well. Now, I am looking for a version of Notepad called editpad or something like that. The program I am thinking of is completely free, notepad replacement, that is awesome for html/php coding.

I tried NVU but it is wayyyy too basic for my needs.

I looove Microsoft Money 2006. I downloaded a "trial" version, and I will be purchasing the next version when it comes out.

I use it for basic HTML, especially preparing posts for my personal site and the Christian Gamers Alliance site. Something basic would probably fit the bill.

You will want Notepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

I use it quite often both at home and at work.
